Recently four members of Porter County Board of Zoning Appeals approved to give an Iowa company special exceptions and variances to build a THIRD gas station at U.S. 6 and Indiana 149, on the northwest corner adjacent to Liberty Township. In this growing age of Tesla and hybrid cars, just what we dream for is another gas station. Within 3 miles of this site along U.S. 6 are SEVEN gas stations, plus two others, closed business failures. A third unneeded station at this intersection will slow down, jam up traffic and make it an even more dangerous intersection. Traffic deaths happened at this intersection when there was just one barely used gas station here. About 30 trees and nice greenery which beautifies this corner will get stripped up, too. Trees are a noise barrier and clean our air which appeals members didn’t bother to discuss and could not care less.

Kudos to Luther Williams, the sole vote opposing these special treatments. I and other residents close by just now learning about this project wish the four other members would have watched out for Porter County citizens’ interests over giving preferential favors to a company 400 miles away. Elected officials who appoint these zoning members will be reviewed and revisited come Tuesday, May 3, 2022.

When Frank J. Mrvan was sworn in as Congressman representing Indiana’s First Congressional District, which includes the Duneland community, in January 2021, he enthusiastically started running on the first day of his new job. In mid-August 2021, frequent contributor to the Chesterton Tribune Voice of the People articles Marti Pizzini reported he may have started running on the wrong foot and in the wrong direction. As a voter for and a supporter of Congressman Mrvan, I wish to advise him with a word of caution: Check the trajectory of your run and make quick adjustments if necessary.

You are following the Democratic footsteps in this congressional district since 1942. Your predecessors Peter J. Visclosky and Ray J. Madden were each elected 17 times for a total of 68 years between them, serving 14 U.S. presidents. Adam Benjamin’s term was shortened by premature death. Don’t follow in the footsteps of the recent one-term POTUS. Concentrate on serving the community that elected you. Your run will be a success, perhaps a stepping-stone to something bigger and better.

Godspeed.
