Friday, Oct. 29

*Jessica Lynch, a former prisoner of war and recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, will share her story at 7:30 p.m. at Chesterton Brewery, 1050 Broadway, Chesterton. Lynch’s convoy was ambushed and her Humvee was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. She was taken by Iraqis, tortured and left for dead, and was rescued nine days later by a team of Navy Seals and Marines.

*Immediately following the Duneland Chamber of Commerce’s Downtown Trickor Treat event, Westchester Public Library will show the film “Hocus Pocus,” rated PG, at Thomas Centennial Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic and lawn chairs for personal comfort and enjoyment. The Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club will offer free popcorn during the event, and cold drinks will be sold for $1.00. For more information, call the Thomas Branch at (219) 926-7696.

*Chesterton United Methodist Church will host a children’s Fall Fun Fest from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church, 434 S. Second St., Chesterton. The free festival includes a bouncy obstacle course, trunk or treat, hot dogs, popcorn and a movie. For more information, call (219) 926-1478.

*The Indiana Department of Child Services and Franciscan Health Michigan City will host a free Trunk or Treat event from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Homer Street campus, 301 W. Homer St., in the south side Barker Street parking lot in Michigan City. Social distancing will be monitored and face coverings or masks, placed over the nose and mouth, are required.

Saturday, Oct. 30

*The public is invited to take part in Franciscan Health Michigan City’s “Remembering Our Babies” at 1 p.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery, 1015 Greenwood Ave. in Michigan City, to commemorate the loss of a pregnancy or newborn. Attendees are requested to wear facemasks and observe social distancing recommendations. Tuesday, Nov. 2 *The Duneland Photography Club meets at 7 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm County Park. The speaker is Susan Kirt, who will discuss “What Bugs You?” as an expert on insect photography. Thursday, Nov. 4

*From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Bethlehem Lutheran Quilting Group meets at the church, at 2050 County Road 1100 North, making quilts to raise funds for the church’s emergency financial aid for families in distress and for Lutheran World Relief. *The Duneland School Board will meet in executive session at 4:30 p.m. at the Administration Center, 601 W. Morgan Ave., Chesterton, to discuss personnel.

*The Duneland School Board will have a regular meeting at 6 p.m. at Chesterton Middle School, auditorium entrance, 651 W. Morgan Ave., Chesterton. Masks are provided and required if unable to maintain 6 feet of social distancing.

Saturday, Nov. 6

* Writing Out Loud at the Michigan City Public Library concludes the 37th season with Eric Zorn at 7:30pm. Zorn is a former American op-ed columnist and daily blogger for the Chicago Tribune who specialized in local news as well as politics. His final column appeared on June 27, 2021. He most recently launched the Picayune Sentinel, an online newsletter. Zorn cowrote the 1990 book Murder of Innocence, about Laurie Dann. The book served as the basis for a 1993 made-for-TV movie with the same name.

*Three Moons Fiberworks presents the third of a free, three-part series featuring the step-by-step processes that transform raw fleece into fabric and art. Participants are required to register for each presentation. “Fleece to Felt” takes place at 1 p.m. and goes for about two hours featuring textile artist Susan Atwell at Three Moons Fiberworks, 402 Broadway, Chesterton.
