*From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Bethlehem Lutheran Quilting Group meets at the church, at 2050 County Road 1100 North, making quilts to raise funds for the church’s emergency financial aid for families in distress and for Lutheran World Relief. * The Duneland Chamber of Commerce will host an afternoon speed networking event from 4 to 6 pm. The event will be held at Ivy’s Bohemia House, 321 Broadway in Chesterton. There is no cost to attend, and Chamber members are encouraged to bring guests. Chamber members and their guests can introduce themselves and their businesses to other event attendees in timed, one-on-one conversations. *The Table of Plenty holds a free Duneland community dinner from 3 to 4:30 p.m. the third Friday of each month as a drivethru pick-up at St. Patrick’s Chapel Hall, 628 N. Calumet Road.

*Take a ranger-led hike to the summit of Mount Baldy from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Meet at the Mount Baldy parking lot off Hwy. 12 just west of Michigan City.

*Westchester Public Library will present the hilarious animated classic, Shrek, rated PG, at Hawthorne Park in Porter. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and enjoy free popcorn from the Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club. Bottled water and soft drinks will be available for $1. Saturday, July 16

*The Indiana Dunes Annual Sand Sculpture Contest will be held from 9 am to 1 pm, although contestants are welcome to get an early start on their sculptures, starting at 7 am. Registration table, near the Park Pavilion, opens at 9 am. This is the contest’s 25th anniversary. Prizes will be awarded at noon for the People’s Choice. All contestants will receive a souvenir. *A free screening of “Tipping the Pain Scale,” an award-winning film about addiction recovery will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at Three20 Recovery, 320 S. Calumet Rd. RSVP required at 320recovery.com. Dinner of sliders and salad can be ordered online for $10.

Sunday, July 17

*Join a ranger for a birding hike on a long-abandoned golf course that is now part of Indiana Dunes National Park. Enjoy an easy walk through the “rough” from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. We’ll “tee off” through a “green” area of the park known to few humans but “par” for a variety of bird species. No golf clubs, carts or caddies needed. Meet at the Dunewood Campground check-in building. Birders of all levels are welcome. Bring your own binoculars or borrow ours. Dunewood Campground is located at 645 Broadway Avenue in Beverly Shores. The campground is just south of the intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and Broadway Avenue. Tuesday, July 19

*Join a ranger from 9:00 am to 11:00 am for the “hike of the week.” This Ranger’s Choice Hike will vary based on what trail is most beautiful or most interesting that day. Meet at the visitor center and then follow the ranger to the trailhead. Program time includes the drive to the trail. Dress for the weather. The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 North State Road 49, about one mile north of Interstate 94. For more information call (219) 395-1882.

*Join the Ogden Dunes Prime Timers for their monthly noon meeting at Ogden Dunes Community Church. Guest speaker will be Ogden Dunes Town Council President Scott Kingar. Lunch is $11. RSVP by texting or calling (765) 610-5514 or emailing n.tatum09@gmail.com
