BZA public hearing on Thursday on use variance for tattoo parlor on S. Calumet

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton Board of Zoning Appeals will hold a public hearing on a use variance for a tattoo parlor, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at the town hall.

The petitioner in the case is MNB Development Corporation, owner of the strip mall at 1505 South Calumet Road, where Tiger Lily and Fire Flies are located. The tattoo parlor in question would be operated by Chesterton resident and tattoo artist Nick Bender, who has 15 years’ experience and is currently working at Speak Easy Tattoo on North Ave. in Chicago.

The strip mall is zoned B-3 and Bender’s parlor would be located in the space at the far west end.

The use variance is required because the Zoning Ordinances’ use table does not include tattoo parlor, and in fact--as several board members noted at the preliminary hearing in June--has not been updated in years.

Preliminary Hearings

The board will also hold two preliminary hearings on Thursday. The petitioner in both cases: Prepared Services LLL, Pedro A. Azevedo and Ana M. Azevedo Living Trust, which is requesting a use variance for a special events center at an unspecified address; and a variance for increased building signage, also at an unspecified address.
