Two decades of DAC dominance continues for CHS Girls Swim team

Already the prohibitive favorites heading into Saturday’s Duneland Athletic Conference girls swim meet, Chesterton had another advantage. They were the hosts.

Amongst the crowd was the Trojans boys’ team dressed as mimes in the stands, getting the student section going with their acts in between races and leading cheers after each win.

Chesterton’s faithful ended up with plenty to cheer about.

The Trojans won 10-of-12 events on their way to 551 1 points, easily outpacing runner-up Lake Central’s 411 and third place Crown Point’s 329 1/2.

“It was a really fun ‘home field advantage’ type of thing,” Chesterton senior Jaclyn Klimczak said. “We’re used to everything here. Sectionals are here in a couple of weeks so this was kind of a practice run for that. It was nice to get a feel for what we can do then.”

The emphatic victory marked the 20th straight DAC crown for coach Kevin Kinel’s team.

“The kids stepped up,” Kinel said. “The young kids got really good championship experience and the veterans came through both in the water and as leaders. All of our kids dropped some times and we swam fast, it was all you can hope for.

“Lake Central was a really great opponent and certainly didn’t disappoint. They were awesome and really pushed us to have some great times. It was a very fast meet, faster than it’s been in a long time which bodes well for the whole conference going forward.”

Chesterton was led by the Klimczak sisters, Jaclyn, and Maisyn, a sophomore. The elder Klimczak recorded wins in the 200 individual medley (2:03.43) and 100 backstroke (55.54), while Maisyn won the 200 (1:54.09) and 500 freestyle (5:01.4).

“I had a rough start to the season and was injured last week, so it was kind of nice to come back and see what I can do under pressure and against good competition,” Jaclyn said. “This was the best competition we’ve raced all year. Lake Central did really well (Saturday). I’m just very happy with today.”

The sisters also both swam a leg of the first place 400 free relay, with Maisyn adding a first on the 200 free relay and Jaclyn the 200 medley relay.

Being the older sister, Jaclyn says she never wants to be bested by her sister, but believes they thrive off one another.

“I never wanna get out and see that my little sister just went faster than me,” Jaclyn said. “At practice, I never want her to have a better set than me either. She can have an equally good set, that’s fine.

“It’s a healthy competition between us. You have someone there who knows you and can talk to you when you get out of the pool.”

For Maisyn, she said doing well on her own and then seeing her sister do the same is “another level of happiness.”

“You’re happy for yourself, but then I see how she’s doing and it just adds to the whole experience,” she said.

Like Kinel, she also believes the meet was good preparation for the postseason ahead.

“This meet makes me really excited to see not only what I can do, but the rest of the team,” she said.

Marina Weinberg (diving), Sophia Gill (100 butterfly) and Alana Jardenil (100 breaststroke) rounded out the wins for the Trojans, with the latter win inciting a “she’s a freshman!” chant from the home crowd.

“We just try to keep tradition going,” Kinel said. “We want these kids to be good people, and not just good swimmers. They are great kids and the boys’ team came out and supported them and I’m just really happy for the whole program.

“The boys’ being here creates the atmosphere that is just so important in a big meet like this. There are a lot of great coaches and teams in our conference, and we’re honored to come out on top.”
