Trojan Softball holds off Valpo

The Chesterton softball team built a 6-0 lead and held on for 6-4 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Valparaiso on Tuesday.

Kaitlyn Carr singled to start the second inning and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Marney Sisson. Gillian Price’s RBI single put the Trojans on the board first with a 1-0 lead.

Micaela Iacovetti singled with one out in the third and would score on Carr’s RBI single to right field for a 2-0 advantage.

The onslaught continued in the fourth as Maddie Snemis singled with two outs ahead of a two-run home run by Cassidy Grimm.

The final two runs for Chesterton came in the fifth as Iacovetti led off with a solo home run and Carr scored on Price’s RBI single.

The Vikings would rally for two runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh.

Offensively, Carr had three hits to lead the Trojans, while Snemis, Grimm, Iacovetti and Price each added two hits. Lexi Benko and Faith Matta both added a single in the win.

Benko worked all seven innings in the circle to get the victory, allowing six hits and striking out nine.

Chesterton returns to the field today when they host Merrillville beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 17, Valparaiso 4

The Chesterton junior varsity had little trouble in picking up a 17-4 victory over Valparaiso on Tuesday.

Hannah Massey went 2-for-4 with two singles, while Hollie Skoczek was 2-for-2 with two singles and two walks.

Massey also worked all five innings in the circle and struck out nine.
