The Chesterton girls basketball team went toe-to-toe with LaPorte, but dropped a 68-54 Duneland Athletic Conference decision on Friday night.

“They are a great team,” Chesterton assistant coach Tommy Berry said. “They got us playing faster than we wanted to play and we just couldn’t slow them down.”

The Trojans found themselves down 18-13 after one quarter and 35-28 at the half, but the third quarter proved to be the difference.

LaPorte forced seven Chesterton turnovers and outscored the Trojans 20-10 to push the lead to 55-38.

“The third quarter they forced us to turn it over too much and we didn’t shoot it as well as we needed to,” Berry said. “The other three quarters, I thought we did a pretty good job.”

The Slicers were 9-of-18 from the floor in the period.

“And it was turnovers to baskets,” Berry said. “Turnovers where you didn’t get a chance to defend on the other end.”

Ashley Craycraft led the Trojans with 19 points, while Marney Sisson added 14 points.

Rounding out the scoring for Chesterton were Haley Moore (9 points), Molly Slatcoff (5 points), Nalani Malackowski (3 points), Emma Schmidt (3 points) and Sydney Balas (1 point).

“We’re continuing to get better. Ultimately, the question is are you better than you were the day before,” Berry said. “I felt like we played hard, did some good things and now we have to put together 32 minutes.”

The Trojans return to the court on Tuesday when they host Bishop Noll. The JV game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
