The Chesterton boys basketball continued to play well and picked up a 57-37 non-conference victory at Hobart on Tuesday night.

“It’s always hard to come off a big win with just one day to prep for somebody,” Chesterton coach Marc Urban said. “I thought we had a really good practice (Monday) and we just tried to win every quarter.”

Trailing 6-5 early, the Trojans locked in defensively and held the Brickies without a basket for 7:49 of game time and built an 18-9 lead.

“We were ok on the defensive end,” Urban said. “We had some early lapses and got away with it. We just have to keep working and getting better.”

The lead grew to 33-19 at halftime as Jake Wadding hit a 60-footer at the buzzer.

“Maybe that shot got him going, but he played well,” Urban said. “He played within himself and when he does that aggressively, that’s when he’s at his best.”

Wadding scored nine third quarter points, including a pair of dunks, on his way to a game-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field.

Chesterton held the Brickies to just one field goal in the fourth quarter as the lead never went under 12 points in the second half.

“Late in the third and fourth, we got in a pretty good groove and got some stops,” Urban said. “That’s when we really separated.”

The Trojans hit on 22-of-40 shots (55 percent) from the field and held Hobart to just 11-of-42 shooting (26 percent).

“Hobart was really aggressive defensively and we were patient,” Urban said. “Sometimes you score on the first pass and sometimes you have to swing the ball to the third side of the floor. Tonight, we had to do that and I’m proud of our guys for doing it.”

Drew Vanderwoude scored 13 points for the Trojans, while Travis Grayson (7 points), Tyler Nelson (4 points), Jack Eaton (4 points), Nick Mullen (4 points), Kolton Cardenas (2 points), Alex Schmidt (2 points) and Jake Warren (2 points) rounded out the scoring.

The Trojans return to the court on Friday night when they travel to LaPorte. The varsity game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
