Madeline Rearick had a goal and spent more time preparing for it than she did getting it.

The Chesterton freshman earned the State Title at 98 lbs. in the Girls Wrestling State Tournament sponsored by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association.

“It was fun to get to see Maddie drop the hammer on the competition,” Chesterton head coach Chris Joll said. “The whole meet was a cool experience.”

Rearick won all three matches in the State Finals at Hamilton Heights High School and won all six of her matches during the State Tournament by fall.

In the third year of the tournament, the Trojans also sent freshman Lexi Wright who competed at 145 lbs.

“It was equally rewarding to watch Lexi grow from the experience and show improvement,” Joll said. “It was nice to see Maddie and Lexi compete on a level field. Some great wrestling took place and our girls contributed to it.”

The National Federation of High Schools said in a release on its website that 16,652 girls wrestled in 2017-2018, up from 11.496 in 2014-2015.

“Women’s wrestling is going to happen and we are on the ground floor with a couple of pillars to both lean and grow on,” Joll said.
