Evan Bates and Brock Ellis win Duneland Conference wrestling titles

The Chesterton wrestling team brought home two individual Duneland Athletic Conference titles and finished fourth as a team Saturday at the DAC Meet in Michigan City.

“We had some outstanding performances and a few lackluster performances,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “We placed about where we should have as a team and will use this meet as a sounding board for the end of the season State run.”

Brock Ellis won the Trojans first title with a perfect 3-0 day at 152 pounds.

Ellis needed just 19 seconds to win his opening match against Michigan City’s Zachary Kizziar and followed that with a fall victory over LaPorte’s Skyler Querry (2:21).

In the finals, Ellis (25-2) rolled to a 13-1 decision over Portage’s Jacob Beehn.

Evan Bates followed the same trek to his title at 182 pounds.

Bates beat Michigan City’s Tyrel Deal in 13 seconds and then beat Crown Point’s Matt McElroy in 24 seconds.

In the finals, Bates (33-2) beat Merrillville’s Khris Walton 13-3.

“Brock and Evan continued their winning ways and won their finals matches fairly easily,” Joll said. “They’ve worked hard and its paying off.”

Three Trojans finished runner-up on the day including Danny Tolin (120), Cade Johnson (138) and Gavin Layman (160).

“Cade and Gavin both did great jobs getting to the finals and both showed how well they responded to training by beating kids in the semifinals that had beaten them before,” Joll said. “Danny walked away from his finals match knowing it was not his best showing, but with a new set of goals.

“It’s a good sign when four of our five finalists are sophomores.”

Chesterton returns to the mat on Wednesday when they host LaPorte beginning at 6:30 p.m.
