CHS Gymnasts win Invite, set school records

It wasn’t perfect, but it sure was impressive.

The No. 2 ranked Chesterton gymnastics team posted the state’s highest score this season with a 114.80 to win the CHS Invitational on Saturday.

“It was a great day,” Chesterton coach Dawn Matthys said. “The last couple of weeks of practice we’ve been more focused and driven. The girls really wanted this. We’re trying hard to peak in the post-season.

“It isn’t our best. We counted a fall today.”

The day got off to a flying start on the vault where the Trojans set the school record with a 28.90 team score.

Jordan Bush took top honors (9.75) with Baylie Lawson (9.70) and Sophie Hunzelman (9.45) finishing second and third. Teammate Whitney Siewin (9.30) was fifth.

“The vault rotation was amazing. Their dynamics and landings were just great,” Matthys said. “They are all looking for the stick. Baylie on vault exceeded my expectations. Jordan’s been a great vaulter for a long time and so have Whitney and Sophie, but to add Baylie to the lineup and have her do that is awesome.”

A trip across the gym to the bars resulted in a pair of school records. As a team, the Trojans posted a 29.2 team score and Hunzelman’s 9.8 also was a record, breaking the score of Bush (9.75) one routine prior.

Mia Pak (9.65) returned to competition with a third place finish and freshman Caitlyn Cook was seventh (9.30).

“I’m thrilled with our bars,” Matthys said. “We led off with a freshman (Cook) that just learned a dismount recently, but she sticks it in practice. We put her in there and she didn’t let us down. And we got Mia back in the lineup today.”

The day’s third rotation was a visit to the beam where the Trojans had to count a fall in posting a 28.0 score. Hailee Ellenwood was runner-up with a 9.55, while Bush scored a 9.25 and Hunzelman tallied a 9.20.

“We led off with an experienced senior (Ellenwood) that set the bar for us and ended up being our highest score,” Matthys said.

With the meet well in hand, the Trojans finished on the floor.

“The girls love to perform,” Matthys said. “Their smiles and enthusiasm always shows up on the floor and lets us finish off the day.”

Bush won the event (9.70) with Hunzelman finishing runner-up (9.55). Lawson was sixth (9.45) and Alyssa Donovan was seventh (9.40).

“The girls challenge each other every day,” Matthys said. “We’ve got a lot of kids that compete to be in the lineup.”

Bush won the All-Around title with a 38.45, while Hunzelman was second (38.00).

“I’m very proud of Jordan and Sophie,” Matthys said. “Jordan doesn’t just work hard, but she takes everyone with her. Her enthusiasm bleeds through the team.

“Sophie stays the course and is always very calm. She sets a great tone and stays within herself.”

The Trojans return to competition on Tuesday when they host No. 1 Valparaiso in the CHS Fieldhouse. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
