CHS Boys outlast Michigan City in sectional semifinal game

Chesterton advanced to the finals by virtue of a 36-28 win over Michigan City on Friday that was about as aesthetically pleasing as the low score indicated.

"It was ugly, ugly basketball, but the bottom line is we found a way to win," Urban said.

Freshman Travis Grayson scored a game-high 12 points for the Trojans, who used a late 7-1 run to turn aside the Wolves in a game where the largest margin was nine.

"They ran a tandem 2-3 zone and kept it high," Urban said. "They were bottling Jake (Wadding) every time he caught the ball. We had some good looks early, but we missed them. We turned the ball over at an incredible rate and it disrupted any flow to the game."

Chesterton shot 40 percent (12 of 30), committed 16 turnovers and missed eight of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the game in doubt longer than it should have been. Fortunately for the Trojans, Michigan City (10-14) was worse, shooting 26 percent (11 of 43) and 1 of 14 from the arc. It led only once at 2-0.

"(Wolves center Ray) Howard is a load down low," Urban said. "Our bigs did a good job on him for the most part. For us to win, we have to win on the defensive end and we did a pretty good job of keeping them in front of us and we rebounded the basketball fairly well, especially late."

Wadding scored five of his eight points in the fourth quarter, nabbed a dozen rebounds and handed out three assists. On a night when production was sparse, Grayson was efficient, making four of six shots and three of four free throws.
