It took the Chesterton baseball team a little time to warm-up the bats, but they came through when it counted most in the Monday’s season opener.

The Trojans scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and used three pitchers to combine for a 2-0 shutout victory at Hammond Gavit.

Jake Roof singled to left field with one out to start the rally. Pinch runner Ethan Mahaffey promptly stole second and third base.

After a popup, Max Weller singled to left plating Mahaffey for a 1-0 lead. Weller would steal second and third before scoring on a wild pitch.

Offensively, Roof, Weller and Haydn Malackowski had hits for the Trojans.

On the mound, Ryan Donly picked up the victory with 3 2/3 innings of relief work in which he recorded five strikeouts. Aidan Turner notched the save with two strikeouts in 2/3 of inning.

Ray Keane got the start for Chesterton and worked 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and striking out four.

The Trojans return to the field tonight when they open Duneland Athletic Confrence play at Crown Point. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
