The Chesterton baseball team split a Duneland Athletic Conference doubleheader with Valparaiso on Tuesday night.

In the opener, Jake Roof singled to left field to start the bottom of the seventh inning in a 1-1 game. Pinch-runner Ethan Mahaffey moved to second base on a balk and to third on Kolton Cardenas’ sacrifice bunt.

Garrett Fairbanks’ ground ball got Mahaffey thrown out at home with the potential game-winner, but Fairbanks went to second on the throw home. Zach Westphal’s single to left scored Fairbanks for the 2-1 victory.

Valpo scored its run in the top of the first, but the Trojans answered with a solo run in the bottom of the inning.

Connor Krantz drew a leadoff walk, stole second and went to third on an errant throw. Tyler Nelson’s sacrifice fly plated Krantz.

Ryan Slivka picked up the win for the Trojans with two innings of relief work (2 strikeouts). Ben Collins worked the first five innings and struck out eight.

In game two, Chesterton outhit Valpo 7-6, but never cracked the scoreboard. The Vikings scored four runs in the third and solo runs in the fifth and sixth to set the final score.

Nelson and Zimmerman each had a pair of hits for the Trojans, including doubles by both.

Ray Keane got the start for Chesterton and worked two innings, before giving way to Aidan Turner. Chad Dzierba logged the final three innings and struck out three.
