The Chesterton girls tennis team opened its season with a runner-up finish in the 8-team Logansport Tournament on Saturday.

LaPorte won the meet, while the Trojans and Seeger followed in the top three.

“As coaches, we couldn’t be prouder of the girls effort today,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “All we’ve been doing is dealing with cold weather and playing each other in practice for the past three weeks to determine possible lineups.

“I think getting out there and seeing other players on the opposite side of the net was refreshing for us.”

The lone flight winner for CHS was the No. 2 doubles team of Lilly Putchaven and Leah Rochford. The duo beat teams from Twin Lakes and Lewis Cass in the first two rounds before beating LaPorte in the championship.

The other doubles team of Hailee Ellenwood and Libby Gibson finished second in their flight. The Trojans beat Benton Central and LaPorte before falling to Rossville in the finals.

In singles, Peyton Martinson finished fifth overall at No. 1. Martinson fell to LaPorte in the opening round, but battled back to beat Twin Lakes and Rossville in straight sets.

At No. 2 singles, Milena Veltri finished runner-up after getting victories over Lewis Cass and Seeger, only to fall to LaPorte in the championship.

At No. 3 singles, Olivia Vesling finished third overall with wins over Rossville and Twin Lakes.

The Trojans return to the court on Thursday when they host Plymouth at 4:30 p.m.
