The Chesterton girls basketball team pulled away in the second quarter and never looked back in a 58-38 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Merrillville on Friday night.

“We eventually just had to play basketball,” Chesterton assistant coach Fred Mitchell said. “The way they play defensively, it’s hard to run any sort of set play. We had to be able to just catch it, shoot it or pass it and we started to do that after the first quarter.”

Chesterton led 13-10 early in the second quarter after a 3-pointer from Ashley Craycraft, but used a 17-4 run midway through the period to blow out to a 30-14 lead.

Craycraft finished with a game-high 20 points.

“Ashley got several steals for us out front and converted them into points,” Mitchell said. “It really changed the game.”

Another 12-0 run in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach as the Trojans cruised to the win.

“We never really let them get it under 10 points in the second half,” Mitchell said. “That’s when you get worried. If you can keep it at 10 or more, you feel pretty good.”

The CHS defense held Merrillville to 15-of-53 shooting (28 percent) from the field and forced 27 Pirate turnovers.

“We played well defensively and turned them over,” Mitchell said. “Our bench, like the Balas’ girls, really played well when we were in some foul trouble. Good team win for us.”

Marney Sisson added 11 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the contest, while Nalani Malackowski (9 points), Emma Schmidt (7 points), Haley Moore (6 points), Evelyn Pabon (3 points) and Sydney Balas (2 points) rounded out the scoring.

The Trojans return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Hobart. The girls varsity game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
