Chesterton Baseball drops DAC opener

The Chesterton baseball team dropped its Duneland Athletic Conference opener 11-4 at Crown Point on Tuesday night.

The Trojans opened the scoring in the top of the first as Kolton Cardenas was hit by a pitch with one out. After stealing second and third, Cardenas scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 CHS lead.

Crown Point answered with a solo run in the first off Chesterton starter Ryan Slivka. In the third, a grand slam by Gene Kolarik pushed the CP lead to 5-1.

CHS cut the lead in half in the sixth as Zach Zimmerman’s single up the middle to score Ethan Mahaffey. Haydn Malacowski’s ground out plated Jeremy Krantz to make the score 5-3.

The Bulldogs exploded again in the sixth offensively as they put six runs on the board for an 11-3 lead.

David Sharp would score the Trojans’ final run in the seventh to set the final score.

Garrett Fairbanks led the Chesterton offense with two hits, while Slivka struck out three in three innings of work. Relief pitcher Zach Westphal struck out two in three innings.

The Trojans return to the field tonight when they host Crown Point at 4:30 p.m.
