Chesterton Baseball beats Portage 8-5

The Chesterton baseball team completed a two-game Duneland Athletic Conference sweep of Portage with an 8-5 victory over the Indians on Thursday.

Portage got on the board in the first with a solo run, but the Trojans responded in the second inning with three runs.

Jake Roof singled with one out and Kolton Cardenas drew a walk to start the rally. After a strikeout, Max Weller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Roof would score on a passed ball and Cardenas scored on an error before Garrett Fairbanks doubled home Weller for the 3-1 lead.

The Indians responded with three runs in the top of the third, but Cardenas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Jeremy Krantz to tie the game at 4-4.

The Trojan bats stayed hot in the fourth inning as Fairbanks started the frame with a single to right. Connor Krantz was hit by a pitch and Jeremy Krantz reached on an error to load the bases. Fairbanks would score on a wild pitch.

Tyler Nelsonís two-run single to left plated Connor and Jeremy Krantz. Nelson would steal third and score as the throw got away, to push the Trojan lead to 8-4.

A solo run by Portage in the fifth set the final score.

Offensively, Nelson led the way with three hits, while Fairbanks added two hits. Jeremy Krantz, Zach McKenna and Roof all tallied singles.

Ray Keane (4 strikeouts) got the win in relief of starter Ryan Slivka (2 strikeouts). Zach Westphal pitched 1 1/3 innings and struck out three, while Nelson recorded the gameís final two outs (2 strikeouts) to get the save.

Chesterton returns to the field on Tuesday when they host Valparaiso beginning at 4:30 p.m.
