Porter County Auditor Vicki Urbanik reports that certified property tax rates will increase in 2019 in all but six Porter County taxing districts.

Six districts saw slight decreases in their rates--none of them in Duneland.

The six districts with decreasing rates are: Morgan Township, Pine Township (Michigan City Schools district), Pleasant Township, Washington Township, Valparaiso (Washington Township), and Valparaiso (Morgan Township).

Of the Duneland districts, Pine Township (Duneland Schools district) saw the most nominal increase from 1.6043 in 2018 to 1.6321 for 2019--an increase of 0.0278. Next was Jackson Township, which saw an increase of only 0.028 from 1.5569 in 2018 to 1.5849 for 2019.

The rest of the districts are as follows:

Westchester Township increased 0.0321 from 1.6977 in 2018 to 1.7298 for 2019.

Burns Harbor increased 0.0334 from 2.0191 in 2018 to 2.0525 for 2019.

Town of Pines increased 0.0531 from 1.9045 in 2018 to 1.9576 for 2019.

Chesterton (Liberty Township) increased 0.0691 from 2.4722 in 2018 to 2.5413 for 2019.

Porter increased 0.2087 from 2.7733 in 2018 to 2.8920 for 2019.

Taxing Unit Rates

Itís important to note that there are rates within rates. The tax rate for a given district is the sum of the rates from various taxing units. Each district rate is the sum of the following unit rates: the County government rate, the Airport rate, the local schools rate, the local library rate, and the township rate. Residents of towns and cities also pay a municipal rate.

The Township rate that Dunelanders in Jackson and Liberty Townships, unincorporated Westchester Township, and the Duneland Schools portion of Pine Township is the sum of different rates for various general expenses, fire services, and township assistance. Those rates for 2019 are not available yet, and will become public in a legal notice once the Auditorís office has prepared 2019 tax bills.

Those in towns and cities do pay a portion of the rate for whatever township their city is in, but do not pay the whole rate. People in Chesterton, for example, will have a portion of the Westchester Township rate reflected in their tax bills, but they do not pay for township fire services, since they are served by the Chesterton Fire Department.

Meanwhile, Dunelanders living in Westchester Township or any of the cities and towns within it, pay the Westchester Public Library rate, while those in Jackson, Liberty, or Pine pay the Porter County Library rate.

The County government rate increased from .4463 in 2018 to .45 for 2019.

The Airport rate increased from .0079 in 2018 to .0080 for 2019.

The Westchester Public Library rate increased from .1922 in 2018 to .1972 for 2019.

The Porter County Public Library rate increased from .068 in 2018 to .069 for 2019.

The Duneland Schools rate--not including the supplemental property tax referendum rate--increased from .9954 in 2018 to 1.0178 for 2019.

Municipal rates increased across the board, though some increased more than others. Coming in with significantly smaller hikes than the others were Burns Harbor and Ogden Dunes. Beverly Shores had the largest unit increase of the Duneland communities.
