Taxing Unit Rates
Itís important to
note that there are rates within rates. The tax rate for a given district is
the sum of the rates from various taxing units. Each district rate is the
sum of the following unit rates: the County government rate, the Airport
rate, the local schools rate, the local library rate, and the t.
The Township rate
that Dunelanders in Jackson and Liberty Townships, unincorporated
Westchester Township, and the Duneland Schools portion of Pine Township is
the sum of different rates for various general expenses, fire services, and
township assistance. Those rates for 2019 are not available yet, and will
become public in a legal notice once the Auditorís office has prepared 2019
Those in towns and
cities do pay a portion of the rate for whatever township their city
is in, but do not pay the whole rate. People in Chesterton, for example,
will have a portion of the Westchester Township rate reflected in their tax
bills, but they do not pay for township fire services, since they are served
by the Chesterton Fire Department.
Dunelanders living in Westchester Township or any of the cities and towns
within it, pay the Westchester Public Library rate, while those in Jackson,
Liberty, or Pine pay the Porter County Library rate.
