Wildland fire at Moraine Nature Preserve Sunday

Back To Front Page

The Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to a wildland fire Sunday at the Moraine Nature Preserve near County Road 650N and Harvest Road in rural Jackson Township, LTFD said.

According to LTFD, at approximately 2:30 p.m. Assistant Fire Chief Michael Wineland arrived on the scene of a wildland fire with initial estimates of more than 10 acres burning. Other departments were called to assist due to the remote location of the fire. Fire crews had to travel to the remote location on foot and by ATV.

The LTFD concluded in its initial investigation that the fire originated in an unattended burn pit off of Harvest road that wasn’t properly extinguished. Weather conditions then caused the fire to spread into the Moraine Nature Preserve.

LTFD would like to remind everyone to act responsibility and be safe, as open burning is prohibited in Porter County under Indiana law.

Assisting agencies were: Washington Township Fire Department, Westville Community Fire Department, Morgan Township Fire Department, Porter Fire Department, South Haven Fire Department, and National Park Service Fire Management.
