Warming centers will be open here

Warming centers will be available this week throughout Duneland and in Valparaiso for folks in need of them.


The meeting room of the Chesterton town hall, 726 Broadway, is open to the public. Cots and blankets and other items are available.

Designated warming centers in Porter: Community Building, 500 Ackerman Drive in Hawthorne Park; fire station, 550 W. Beam St.

Folks are being asked to first call the Porter Police Department at 926-7611 before visiting a warming center. Transportation for Porter residents may be available.

Residents are also being asked to check on their neighbors, particularly seniors.


Three warming centers will be open but not 24/7:

* Valparaiso YMCA, 1202 Cumberland Crossing: 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Call 462-4185.

* Porter County Public Library, Valparaiso branch, 103 Jefferson St.: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Call 462-0524.

* Vale Park Enrichment Center at Banta, 605 Beech St.: 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 462-1301.
