Porter Police Lt. John W. McMahon has been honored by Chesterton American Legion Post 170 as Law Officer of the Year at the district level, the Porter Police Department is announcing.

McMahon is being recognized for his valor, selflessness, and professionalism while responding to a report of a 14-year-old Illinois boy missing in the water at Indiana Dunes State Park. The incident occurred on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018, and was the second of two drownings at Dunes State Park within the space of an hour.

McMahon spotted what appeared to be a boy’s arm in the waves and immediately, “without concern for his personal safety,” entered the water--accompanied by PPD Officer Kevin Rospierski--swam to the boy, and then pulled him to shore, where lifesaving efforts were made.

The boy, tragically, did not survive.

McMahon and guests will be attending a ceremony in Indianapolis on Saturday, July 13, to receive the district level award from the American Legion. A statewide Law Officer of the Year will also be selected from among the district award recipients.

In May both McMahon and Rospierski were awarded the Medal of Valor for their efforts on Aug. 18, 2018, by the Porter Police Commission.
