A motorist was injured on Tuesday after striking a NIPSCO pole on Ind. 2 in Center Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

According to police, at 5:46 p.m. Chad Bailey, 46, of Wanatah, was traveling northeast on Ind. 2, north of Heavlin Road, when he left the roadway to the right for unknown reasons, although “speed and roadway conditions are believed to be a contributing factor.”

Bailey then struck the NIPSCO pole, police said, and was found unconscious on first-responders’ arrival. Lutheran Air was initially requested to transport Bailey to hospital by helicopter, but was unable to fly due to weather conditions. Bailey was instead transported to Franciscan Health Crown Point.

Ind. 2 at the crash scene was closed for several hours as a NIPSCO crew worked to repair the downed pole and wires. Police said that a second minor property-damage crash occurred when a truck struck the pole.
