Two juveniles were taken into custody on Thursday after the Indiana State Police said that they were throwing rocks off the Harrison Street overpass onto vehicles traveling below on I-94.

“One vehicle sustained extensive damage as a result of thrown rocks,” the ISP said, although no one was injured.

Troopers responded to the scene at 1:15 p.m. and took a criminal incident report from the victim, the ISP said. Meanwhile, Gary Police officers located two juveniles who “matched the description of the rock throwers” and--after consultation with the Lake County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office--the two were transported to the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center in Crown Point on a delinquency charge of criminal mischief, the ISP said.

“The names, ages, sex, and race of each of the juveniles will not be released,” the ISP said. “It is believed that only one vehicle sustained extensive damage.”

“Thankfully, nobody was injured as a result of this extremely negligent act,” the ISP added. “This specific behavior in the past resulted in serious injuries to include death to innocent motorists.”

“The Indiana State Police recognizes the 911 callers for quickly reporting this crime, as well as the prompt response by the Gary Police Department in apprehending the offenders,” the ISP said.
