Eagle Crossing worker dies after fall

Chesterton Police are reporting the death of a drywall subcontractor who fell off a ladder on Monday at the Eagle Crossing Apartments worksite, in the 2100 block of Kelle Drive.

CPD identified the victim as Mattias Francisco Miguel-Baltazar, 35, a Guatemalan national with a listed address in Indianapolis.

According to police, at 10:12 a.m. officers responded to the worksite following a 911 call reporting that a man had fallen and was having difficulty breathing. On their arrival, officers found Miguel-Baltazar on a concrete slab foundation, unresponsive and “his head surrounded by blood,” police said.

Chesterton Fire Department first-responders applied a chest compression device to Miguel-Baltazar, then transported him to Porter Regional Hospital. “A short time later,” officers received word that he had died.

At the time of the accident, Miguel-Baltazar--employed by a subcontractor at the worksite, Alexis Construction of Indianapolis--was “standing at the top of an eight-foot A-frame ladder,” handing plywood to co-workers on the second floor of the 2113 apartment building. One of the co-workers, after taking a sheet of plywood from Miguel-Baltzar, observed him “to sway,” then fall. The co-worker did not actually see him land, however, as his view was obscured by second floor subfloor, police said.

Co-workers called Miguel-Baltazar a dependable employee who “was working out quite well,” police noted.

Miguel-Baltazar’s family has been notified, police also said.

Porter County Cyndi Dykes told the Chesterton Tribune this morning that her office would release a statement this afternoon, after deadline.
