The worker who suffered a fatal fall off a ladder on Monday at the Eagle Crossing Apartment worksite died of a skull fracture.

After deadline on Thursday, Porter County Coroner Cyndi Dykes told the Chesterton Tribune that Mattias Francisco Miguel-Baltazar, 35, sustained a “complex skull fracture due to blunt force trauma of the head resulting from an elevated fall.”

Miguel-Baltazar, a Guatemalan national with a listed address in Indianapolis, was employed by a subcontractor at the Eagle Crossing Apartments worksite, Alexis Construction of Indianapolis.

According to Chesterton Police, the accident occurred at 10:12 a.m. as Miguel-Baltazar was standing at the top of an eight-foot A-ladder, handing sheets of plywood to two co-workers on the second floor of the 2113 apartment building on Kelle Drive. One of the co-workers, after taking a sheet of plywood from Miguel-Baltazar, observed him “to sway,” then fall. Miguel-Baltazar landed on a concrete slab foundation and was unresponsive when first-responders arrived. He died shortly after at Porter Regional Hospital.

Dykes said that the results of a routine toxicology screen are pending and that the accident remains under investigation.
