Chesterton firefighters responded to two different accidents at the intersection of Ind. 49 and East Oakhill Road on Thursday.

Chesterton Police have not yet completed their reports on the circumstances of either accident, but CFD Lt. Steven Himan told the Chesterton Tribune today that injuries were sustained in both crashes and that at both scenes Ind. 49 and East Oakhill Road were briefly closed for emergency response.

The first crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. and involved two vehicles. One person was transported to Porter Regional Hospital, then subsequently airlifted to another hospital, while a second person was transported to the Franciscan Alliance ER department on Indian Boundary Road, Himan said. The CFD cleared that scene at 12:09 p.m.

The second crash--what Himan characterized as a “T-bone” accident--occurred around 5:15 p.m. Porter FD was first on the scene and had begun the extrication of a passenger in one of the vehicles by the time the CFD arrived. That person was initially transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary, then later airlifted to another hospital as well, Himan said. The CFD cleared that scene at 5:52 p.m.
