firefighters responded to two different accidents at the intersection of
Ind. 49 and East Oakhill Road on Thursday.
have not yet completed their reports on the circumstances of either
accident, but CFD Lt. Steven Himan told the Chesterton Tribune today
that injuries were sustained in both crashes and that at both scenes Ind. 49
and East Oakhill Road were briefly closed for emergency response.
The first crash
occurred around 11:30 a.m. and involved two vehicles. One person was
transported to Porter Regional Hospital, then subsequently airlifted to
another hospital, while a second person was transported to the Franciscan
Alliance ER department on Indian Boundary Road, Himan said. The CFD cleared
that scene at 12:09 p.m.
crash--what Himan characterized as a “T-bone” accident--occurred around 5:15
p.m. Porter FD was first on the scene and had begun the extrication of a
passenger in one of the vehicles by the time the CFD arrived. That person
was initially transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary,
then later airlifted to another hospital as well, Himan said. The CFD
cleared that scene at 5:52 p.m.
