Raymond J. Carnes,
age 98 of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away on December 1, 2018 at
Rittenhouse Village of Michigan City.
He is survived by
his loving daughter, Sharon Carnes, of Michigan City. He is also survived by
his son-in-law Laurence Silvestri, and nephews Richard, Edward, Russel and
William Walen; Bradley and Barry Warble, and nieces Roxanne Warble and Terry
Coleman.
He is preceded in
death by his wife, Frances, and his brother, William.
During WWII, Ray
“kept ‘em flying” serving in the Army Air Corps as an Airplane Mechanic
Instructor. Upon his return, he worked as an Instrument Technician at
Western Electric in Cicero, IL, and retired with 28 years of service.
He organized a
group of homeowners and fought for fair treatment during the Indiana Dunes
National Lakeshore land acquisition. He was a long time Chesterton community
advocate where he spearheaded efforts to bring Lake Michigan water to the
town and raised funds for safety equipment for the Chesterton Fire and
Police Department. Ray loved to reminisce about the summers he spent on
Beaver Island, Michigan, working on his uncle’s fish boat.
Funeral services
will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2018, at 11 a.m., at White-Love
Funeral Home, 525 S 2nd St., Chesterton, IN. Burial will follow at St.
Patrick Cemetery.
The family will
receive friends on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at
the funeral home.
