Services set for John Matta Sr.

John J. Matta Sr., 82, of Valparaiso, died on Thursday, May 8, 2014.

He was born on June 13, 1931, in Homestead, Pa., the son of John and Mary (Winslow) Matta, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Matta; children, Mary Bridges of Portage, Kathleen (David) Pera of Avon, John (Mary Ann) Matta Jr. of Portage, Michael (Lori) Matta of Valparaiso; grandchildren, Max, Mallory, Matthew, Mary, Marisa, Joey, Faith, Hope, Sarah, Ricky, Tiffany, Aisha, Tim, Ryan, and Natalie; and many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Clement (Judy) Matta.

John was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of Mississippi State University.

Funeral services, Father Paul Quanz officiating, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 356W 700N in Portage Township. Burial will follow at Heritage Cemetery in Portage.

Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m., at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 6941 Central Ave. in Portage.
