Steven W. Smith dies at age 55

Steven W. Smith, 55, of Liberty Township, passed away Friday, September 16, 2011.

He was born August 28, 1956 in Valparaiso.

He married Teri Lambert in 1983 and she preceded him in death in 1997.

On July 16, 1999 he married Joanne Christian who survives along with children Kellie (Philip) Borth of Valparaiso, Christopher (Melissa) Smith of Wanatah, Jaime (Robert) Unate-Martin of Valparaiso, Christopher S. (Beatrice) Hart of Auburn and Virginia S. Hart of Fort Wayne.

Also surviving are his mother, Betty (Charles) Woodyard of Jackson Township, father, Bruce B. (Joanne) Smith of Valparaiso, brothers and sisters Judy (Rob) Kittridge of Valparaiso, Amy Sutton of Valparaiso, John (Vika) Woodyard of Georgia, Joellen (Mike) Barker of Arizona, Jim (Noriko) Woodyard of Georgia, Bill (Gene) Murray of Louisiana, Karen (Roger) Karmolinski of Florida, Kathy (Tom) Durand of Illinois, John (Judi) Lowery of Indianapolis and nine grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his grandparents Carl and Louise Tising and Arthur and Naomi Smith.

Steven graduated from Chesterton High School in 1974 and received an Associates Degree from Vincennes University. He had been a mechanic with B & H then Mitchell & Schoppel for over 20 years before his current position as a welder and mechanic for Westville Correctional Center. Throughout it all he continued to be a respected “tractor mechanic”.

His career spilled over into his passion for classic cars, especially vintage Corvettes. Steve’s community and his dogs were of high priority, but his family, wife, children and grandchildren were always number one.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 103 N. Franklin St., Valparaiso with entombment to follow at Graceland mausoleum.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or American Cancer Association.
