Service set for Alison Mason

Chesterton resident Alison Mason passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011 in Portage. She was 84.

Born Nov. 15, 1926 in Gold, Texas, she was the daughter of John Edward and Frances Elvira (Alexander) Griffin, who preceded her in death.

Alison is survived by her sons, John F. (wife Carol) Zehner of Valparaiso and Curtis (Myrtle) Zehner of Burns Harbor; daughter, Becky (husband Bill) Dewalt of Lewisville, Texas; step children Richard (Linda) Mason of Lancaster, Pa., Sally (Steve) Sweney of Michigan City, Debbie (Talbert) Shinsako of Oak Park, Ill., and Nancy Brachtenbach of Seattle, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six brothers; five sisters; daughter, Carla Jovanovich; stepson, Daniel Mason; and husbands, John F. Zehner Sr. and Harold T. Mason.

Alison was a former member of Porter United Methodist Church. She was formerly active in the VFW Auxiliary and the Westport Community Club. She drove a stock car and also drove in a Demolition Derby. Alison was raised on the Morris Ranch in Texas. During World War II, she worked at Fort Sam Houston. She returned to Indiana with her first husband, where they owned and operated Zehner Excavation Company. She also worked as a waitress at State Park Drugs.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, with Pastor Mike Denny officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 28 from 5 p.m. until the time of service at 7 p.m. Cremation will be performed by Heritage Crematory, Portage.
