James Charles Mills, of Chesterton, went to be with the Lord in his home
under his family’s care, Feb. 10, 2011.
He was 93. He was born Jan. 3, 1918 in Hammond, IN, the son of James Walter
and Vallie Lee Mills, both of whom preceded him in death.
On June 11, 1939 he married Willie Juanita Yates who preceded him in death,
Feb. 9, 2004. They celebrated 65 years of marriage and ministry together.
James was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by a son, James Douglas (Janette) Mills of Valparaiso; a
daughter, Nancy Lee (Gary) Beavers of Liberty Township; four grandchildren,
James Wilson Mills, Jason Chadwick (Erika) Mills, Darren Ward Beavers and
Dawn Lee (Chago) Vaca; seven great grandchildren, Christopher James Mills,
Erailia Pena, Rachel Renee’ Beavers, Samantha Lynn Beavers, Karissa LeeAnne
Beavers, Payton Drew Vaca, Jaida Brie Vaca and several nieces and nephews.
He has pastored several churches in Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee and also
built 17 churches in Northwest Indiana.
Pastor Mills was also a soloist and loved to use music in his ministry of
seventy years. For the past 7 years he has had a ministry at the Waters of
Duneland visiting the residences’ and sharing his life’s story. Many people
in Chesterton had become his dearest friends because of his outgoing
personality.
He was not only a “Fisher of Men,” but enjoyed fishing for fish! His family
will greatly miss him, as a Papa who was a wonderful role model.
A Funeral Service, officiated by Pastor Rick Henderson of Chesterton
Southern Baptist Church, will be held Monday, February 14, 2011 at 1:00 pm
Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. Interment will be at
Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled from 2:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at
Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Chesterton, IN.
