Sigrid Anderson dies at 89

Sigrid A. L. Anderson, 89, of Porter, passed away Friday, August 14, 2009 at The Waters of Duneland, Chesterton.

She was born May 20, 1920 in Westchester Twp. the daughter of Anton and Sophia (Hallberg) Bodin, both of whom preceded her in death.

On December 21, 1940 at Augsburg Church in Porter she was married by Rev. Paul Nelson to Russell L. Anderson, who preceded her in death in 1982.

She is survived by two daughters, Judith L. (James L.) Fant, of Chesterton and Ingrid C. (William L.) Ryan, of Chesterton; five grandchildren, Linnea M. (Donald) Kountz, of Crystal Lake, Ill., James A. (Lynda) Fant, of Chesterton, Jeffrey L. Ryan, of Valparaiso, Gretchen C. (Drew) Rhed, of Chesterton and Regan B. (Jessica) Ryan, of Forrest Park, Ill.; nine great-grandchildren, Catherine, Kurt, Andrew Fant, Erik and Brian Kountz, Lucas, Gabrielle, Dominic Rhed and Madelyn Ryan and many relatives in America and Sweden.

She was also preceded in death by her twin brothers, Sylven and Siverd Bodin.

Sigrid was a 1938 graduate of Chesterton High School and attended Valparaiso University. Sigrid was an organist for Augsburg Lutheran Church in Porter for 53 years. In addition to playing for services, she played for many weddings, funerals, Junior Choir, Senior Choir and Vacation Bible School. Sigrid played the pump organ at the Historic Burstrom Chapel for services there.

Sigrid volunteered her services and talents at Whispering Pines (Pines Village) in Valparaiso and The Waters of Duneland in Chesterton. She also played music at the Senior Center in Porter. In 2004 at the age of 84, Sigrid was named Porter’s Citizen of the Year. She was a member of Chesterton Woman’s Club.

Funeral Services, Pastor Erik Bernth officiating, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 18 at Augsburg EV Lutheran Church, 100 N. Mineral Springs Road, Porter. Interment will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Monday, August 17 at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at Augsburg Church.

Memorials are preferred to Augsburg EV Lutheran Church.
