Ruth Ahlberg dies at 88

Ruth C. Ahlberg, 88, of Chesterton, formerly of Galesburg, Ill., died at 8:17 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at the Waters of Duneland, Chesterton, Ind.

She was born February 10, 1921 in Humboldt, Iowa, the daughter of Reuben and Christina Riskjeld Apland.

On June 16, 1945 in Devils Lake, N.D. she married Rev. G. Harold Ahlberg, who preceded her in death on June 4, 2007.

She is survived by three sons, David (Mary) Ahlberg of DuBois, Pa, James (Elaine) Ahlberg of Rochelle, Ill., and Jonathan (Carolyn) Ahlberg of Perrysburg, Ohio; a daughter, Natalie (Franklin) Firestone of Porter; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Marlene) Apland of the state of Oregon, and a sister, Bernice Wipf of Redlands, Calif.

Ruth graduated from Hampden High School in 1938. She also attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn. and Minot College in Minot, N.D. Ruth had lived her life in Humboldt, Iowa, Hampden, N.D., Minneapolis, Minn., North Easton, Mass., Chicago, Ill., Galesburg, Ill., Plymouth, Mich., and Valparaiso, Ind..

Ruth was a teacher in North Dakota and later at the former Galesburg Covenant Church Preschool and Kindergarten. While in Galesburg, she was an active member of the Covenant Church. She was active in the Covenant Women, Church Circle, and supported her husband in his ministry. She also participated in Study Club. When younger, Ruth was involved in 4-H, winning many awards. Ruth loved spending time with her family and her many friends.

Her wit and humor brought joy and laughter to all those around her. She loved camping, sewing, needlepoint, baking, reading, and playing games. She loved the Lord and passed this love to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Funeral services, Rev. Thomas Ek officiating, will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 2009 in the Galesburg Covenant Church.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Covenant Church. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com
