Hildreth Jane Gaebe dies at 90

Jane Gaebe, age 90, passed away August 14, 2009.

She was born in Gary July 21, 1919 the daughter of Oscar Franklin Ringer and Mary Armstrong Malcolm, both deceased.

On October 21, 1939, she married Marvin E. Gaebe, son of Dr. and Mrs. E.C. Gaebe, at City Methodist Church in Gary.

She is survived by a son Geoffrey (Judith) Gaebe, of San Diego, Calif.; daughter Leslie Jane (Patrick) Ballard, of Terre Haute; grandchildren Geoffrey Jr., San Diego, Calif. and Susan Holycross, of Rockhill, SC; step-great grandson Jon Kent, of San Diego, Calif.; niece, Nancy Jane (James) Crichton, of Saline, Mich.; and nephew Robert Malcolm McCaslin, of Henderson, Nev.

Her sister, Mara Louise McCaslin, preceded her in death in May 1998 as did her step-father, Paul Remus.

Jane attended Horace Mann in Gary from kindergarten through high school, graduating in 1937. Jane was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club in Gary and later in Chesterton, the Chesterton Woman’s Club, and the Duneland Historical Society, holding various offices in all. A life-long opera devotee, she served as Publicity Chairman for the Dunes Country Chapter of Lyric Opera of Chicago. She also served on Horace Mann High School reunion committees for many years.

A long-time member of City Methodist Church in Gary, Jane also belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Chesterton before moving to Terre Haute in 2003. She was employed by U.S. Steel for a total of 43 years at the South Works, Gary works and Pittsburgh headquarters locations. A much loved mother and friend, she will be greatly and deeply missed.

Funeral Services, Pastor Cathy Allison, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 18 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. Interment at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday, August 17 at the funeral home.

Memorials are preferred to the First United Methodist Church, 434 South Second Street, Chesterton, IN 46304 or to Lyric Opera of Chicago, 20 N. Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60606.
