Former Jackson Twp. Trustee William 'Bill' Mathe dies at 84

William A. “Bill” Mathe, of Nashville, Tenn., formerly of Chesterton, passed away April 6, 2009 at Trevecca Long Care Center, Nashville, Tenn.

He was born May 28, 1924 in Gary, the son of Alex and Mary (Dunnovski) Mathe, both of whom preceded him in death.

On September 14, 1957 in Chesterton, he married Jean A. Fiester, who survives in Nashville, Tenn.

He is also survived by a son, Christopher A. Mathe, of Nashville and many dear friends.

Bill was a graduate of Indiana University, with a degree in psychology. He was a member of St. John’s United Church, Chesterton. He retired from U.S. Steel Corp. in 1983 where he was a supervisor with 40 years service.

He was a Veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army in the combat engineers. An account of his war experience, written by reporter Jim Hale appeared in the Chesterton Tribune during the 50th anniversary of the war.

Bill served as Jackson Twp. Trustee from 1967-1975 and also served on the Duneland School Board.

He was a Chesterton Tribune advertising representative until his retirement.

Funeral services, Pastor Katie Lindberg officiating, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 14 at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton. Interment will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.
