Caroline Zaparucha dies at 94

Caroline T. Zaparucha, 94, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at Whispering Pines Nursing Home, Valparaiso.

She is survived by a son, Timothy (Judy) Zaparucha; daughters, Stephanie (James) Miller of Chesterton, Carol (Zaparucha) Goldsmith and Mary Lou (Robert) Judis; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen L. Zaparucha; father, John Drag; mother, Anna (Kalemba) Drag; brothers, Walter (Kay) Drag, Mitchell (Alfreda) Drag, John (Isabell) Drag and sister, Sasha Drag.

Caroline worked as a sewing machine operator for Bear Brand in Gary. After she married, she was a homemaker and raised four children. In her 50s she attended Purdue University and became a licensed practical nurse at Mercy Hospital in Gary. She was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Gary, then transferred to Nativity Parish in Portage. She belonged to the Nativity choir that sang for funerals and she and Steve worked in the church kitchen making pierogis for church festivals and fish fries.

Mass of Christian Burial, Rev. Andrew Corona officiating, will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, July 27 at Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, 2949 Willowcreek Road, Portage. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the Church Monday.
