Margaret N. OConnell, PhD dies at 91

Margaret N. O’Connell, Ph.D., (nee Norheim), of Dune Acres and Chicago, passed away Jan. 2, 2008. She was 91.

She was born March 25, 1916 in Minot, N.D., the daughter of Robert and Ida Norheim, both of whom preceded her in death.

Her husband, Charles D. O’Connell, preceded her in death.

She is survived by nieces and nephews Peggy (John) Greisbergr of Worthington, Ohio, Kathy (Roy) Hay of Ashland, Neb., Robert (Janet) Gleason of Omaha, Neb. and John (Kathleen) Gleason of Paldrville, Calif.; dear friend, Dan Zelviene and lifelong friend of Sr. Sheila Megley.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Gleason.

She was a graduate of St. Catherine’s College in Minneapolis, Minn. Margaret earned her masters and Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. She served in the Red Cross during WWII in Germany, then began her teaching career in Enderlin, N.D. She was a professor of English at St. Xavier University starting in 1961 and also was a professor of humanities and music at Duchesne College in Omaha, Neb.

A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at Mercy Hall Chapel, 3737 W. 99th St., Chicago. Interment was at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas the Apostle School Tuition Program, 5467 Woodlawn Ave., Chicago, IL 60615.
