Michael E. Melnichak dies at 77

Michael E. Melnichak, of Chesterton, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2007 at VNA Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso. He was 77.

He was born Nov. 29, 1929 in Tuxedo, N.Y.

The was married to Adrienne F. Zurek, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by a brother, William S. Melnichak of Monroeville, Pa.; a sister, Leona M. Lis of N. Versailles, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Marian (Donald) Adamczyk of Glenwood, Ill., many nieces and nephews and other relatives and special friends, Paul and Joyce Vinson of Chesterton.

Michael was a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Chicago, retired in 1999. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of American Chemical Society. Michael volunteered at Indiana Dunes State Park and worked for Meals on Wheels and VNA Hospice also as a volunteer. He did photography and archiving of photography for the Indiana Dunes State Park.

A Mass of Christian Burial, Fr. James Meade officiating, will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 18 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Rd., Chesterton. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, Ill.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Sunday with a Wake service at 5:30 p.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway.
