The Duneland School Board approved the appointment of two new teachers to fill elementary physical education and art positions that were left vacant at the end of the 2017 school year.

Director of Elementary Learning and Performance Christy Jarka got the Boardís approval to fill the vacant positions in April after a committee of stakeholders concluded that students at Jackson Elementary and Brummitt Elementary werenít getting enough instruction time in Art and PE without full-time teachers for each of those subjects at each school.

Heather Connors was hired as an Art teacher at Brummitt. Connors was formerly employed at Griffith Public Schools and has been an instructional aide at Jackson Elementary. Connors said she was very excited for the opportunity to teach in Duneland and moved here with her four children for the quality education.

William Butz was hired as a PE Teacher at Brummitt. Butz is a 2011 CHS graduate with a bachelorís from Valparaiso University and experience coaching at Duneland. ďIím really excited to start my next chapter at Duneland. I just want to give back to the community thatís given so much to myself and my family,Ē Butz said.

Katherine Morrisroe was hired to teach Art at CMS. Morrisroe was not able to attend Mondayís meeting, but is a graduate of Morgan Township High School and Grace College and comes highly recommended from Portage High School, where she was recently a long-term sub.

In other personnel business, Duneland Schools Superintendent Chip Pettit took a moment to thank fifth grade teacher Kathleen Telligman for her work at Duneland. Telligman is retiring from Westchester Intermediate after devoting 42 years to Duneland Schools.

The Board approved the following additional personnel moves:

Kylee Caudle, second grade teacher at Jackson Elementary

Teresa Kosakowski, Kindergarten teacher at Jackson Elementary

Britni Psimos, first grade teacher at Jackson Elementary
