The deadline is fast approaching for the popular Wizard of Oz Fantasy Parade. Parade applications must be submitted by August 26 for participation in Chesterton’s Wizard of Oz Fantasy Parade and are subject to approval by the parade committee. The popular Parade includes between 60 and 70 units, each reflecting a Wizard of Oz theme based on the classic MGM movie. This year’s theme is “Dorothy and the Scarecrow meet the Tinman along the Yellow Brick Road.”

Judging categories were revised last year in an attempt to more accurately reflect the varied participation. The first place traveling trophy will be awarded to the winner of the Corporate Challenge, which is all entries sponsored by an area business; first & second place trophies will be awarded to Non-Corporate Float, float sponsored by civic, religious, non-profit, and other like organization; Choreographic Unit, baton, dance, drill, and other performing teams; Walking Unit, costumed walker or walkers; Musical Unit, live music performed by group or individual; Decorated Vehicle, decorated motorized vehicles; and Novelty Unit, animal group, clowns, giant balloon, or other unusual entry.

Parade entries are judged by a trio of experienced judges, and all are eligible for The Judges Choice Award, bestowed upon the best overall unit. Judges consider theme interpretation, originality of presentation, workmanship, costuming, props, craftsmanship, and audio, if included, in all their decisions.

This year’s Wizard of Oz Fantasy Parade steps off promptly at 10 a.m. On Saturday, September 17th and will be led by United States Naval Color Guard and Chesterton’s own award winning Trojan Guard Marching Band.

Applications can be obtained by phoning the Lakeshore Festival & Events office, (219) 983-1691, contacting Julie Brown, Parade Chairperson at (219) 617-6900 or download an application from their website
