Porter seeks candidates for vacant Town Council seat

Porter Town Council member Bill Sexton's resignation becomes effective Aug. 31, but so far no Republican has expressed an interest in replacing him.

Nevertheless, Porter County Republican chairman Charles Williams has set a caucus for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Porter town hall, 303 Franklin St., to choose Sexton's replacement.

Sexton represents District 1 generally covering the east side of town; his successor must live within that ward. For specific boundary information, contact town Clerk-treasurer Carol Pomeroy at 926-2771.

The new council member will be chosen by a majority vote of eligible Porter GOP precinct committeepersons. The law requires a secret ballot, according to Williams. The candidate(s) will be given up to three minutes each to address the caucus.

All persons interested in completing the three years and four months of Sexton's remaining term must obtain a declaration of candidacy form from the Porter County Board of Voter Registration and submit the completed form there by hand delivery or U.S. mail not later than 72 hours prior to the caucus.

The Voter Registration office is located in the County Administration building, 155 Indiana Ave. Room 105 in Valparaiso. The phone number is 465-3484.

Sexton is in his fifth year as a councilman and announced his surprise resignation last month saying he wanted to simplify his life and spend more time with his family.
