Just for the record: the Chesterton Utility would not be encroaching on any
of the property of State Park Little League (SPLL) should it build a storage
tank to eliminate sewage discharges into the Little Calumet River.
That’s because the left and left-center fields of the SPLL softball field
actually encroach on Utility property, Superintendent Steve Yagelski
reminded Dunelanders at Monday’s meeting of the Town Council.
Yagelski has said previously that the Utility will do everything in its
power to avoid forcing SPLL to find a new location for the softball field.
But it will almost certainly need to use that portion of its property
currently used by SPLL for parking.
Kudos for the
Street Department
In other business, the council took receipt of a letter from Dennis Byron
praising Street Commissioner John Schnadenberg and the Street Department for
their prompt cleanup of the dust and debris on South Calumet Road kicked up
by traffic and wind from the gravel patch on South Calumet Road left by the
emergency sanitary sewer replacement. “Every time I have asked involving
John’s help he has responded. . . . Thanks to John and his crew for an
outstanding job,” Byron wrote.
Kudos for the
Police Department
From the floor a Chesterton resident who wished to remain anonymous, for
fear of retribution from skateboarders, praised the Chesterton Police
Department for its efforts in controlling skateboarders. “Take pictures of
the kids,” the resident urged. “Have a cell phone in your hand and call the
police. They will leave.”
Advice from the
Tree Committee
Meanwhile, Tree Committee President Jeff Cernick strongly advised residents
not to “top” their trees when trimming them. Not only is topping an
unattractive way to prune trees, it also kills them. The Street Department
has literature available on the proper way to trim, he said.
