Utility: Overflow of sewage Friday into Little Cal

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton Tribune received notification after deadline on Monday that there was, in fact, an “overflow of sewage” during Friday’s rain event at the Chesterton wastewater treatment plant.

The Tribune initially reported on Monday--incorrectly--that there was no overflow or bypass.

The event lasted around three hours, from 8:53 to 11:57 p.m. The Utility did not say how many gallons overflowed into the East Branch of the Little Calumet River.

Rainfall on Friday totaled 3.45 inches, enough nearly to fill the Utility’s 1.2-million gallon storage basin, with 989,400 gallons of excess flow.
