There is a distinction between illegal open burning and legal
recreational fires, and Chesterton Fire Chief Mike Orlich wants you to know
it.
The open burning of leaves and other refuse is illegal in the Town of
Chesterton—as it is in Porter County—due to air quality non-attainment
issues.
But residents are still permitted to have camp fires, fire pits, and other
recreational fires, under certain conditions:
•An adult is supervising and attending the recreational fire.
•The recreational fire is not a nuisance to neighbors or businesses.
•The material burned is appropriate: clean wood, not leaves or rubbish.
