The Chesterton Park
Department has--for the first time--an assistant superintendent.
At their meeting
Tuesday night, members voted unanimously, on Superintendent Bruce Mathias’
recommendation, to appoint Shane Griffin to the position, effective April 1.
Griffin has a
degree in outdoor recreation and resource management from Indiana University
and comes to the Chesterton Park Department from the National Park Service,
where since 2002 he’s worked as a seasonal and then a permanent staffer at
Indiana Dunes National Park.
Griffin told the
Chesterton Tribune after the meeting that his most recent posting at
Indiana Dunes National Park has been in interpretation and
outreach/education but that he’s worked a variety of assignments: with the
road and trail crew, the fire crew, in fee collection, and in maintenance.
Griffin was also
born and raised in Chesterton.
“I think you’re
going to bring a lot of positivity to the Park Department,” Member Candy
Tucker said. “And I’m really excited to have you on board.”
“I’m excited too,”
Late last year the
board began the search for an assistant superintendent, with an eye to
grooming someone to succeed Mathias at such time as he decides to retire.
In other business,
members voted unanimously to authorize the Duneland Exchange Club to place a
banner promoting Child Abuse Prevention Month--April--on the bandstand in
Thomas Centennial Park.
The banner will go
up on April 1 and be removed by April 30.
