Work is scheduled
to begin on the 23rd Street storm sewer replacement project on Monday, Aug.
24.
The general
contractor, Gough Inc. of Merrillville, is staging materials right now, with
the Park Department making its facility available for storage, Chesterton
Town Engineer Mark O’Dell told the Stormwater Management Board at its
meeting Monday night.
Approximately 150
feet of new sewer line will be laid south of Dakota Street and a further 140
feet south of the entrance to Westchester Village on the Green.
23rd Street won’t
be closed during the project, O’Dell said, but motorists in both directions
will be restricted to one lane, with a flagger on the scene directing
traffic.
Sink Holes
In other business,
Street Commissioner John Schnadenberg reported that two sink holes--each
about a foot square and some six to eight inches deep--opened up on Monday
east of Ind. 49: one by a failing storm sewer drain on Roberts Road, the
other by a failing drain on Sand Creek Drive North.
The sink holes form
after the seal around the drain’s casting loses its integrity, Schnadenberg
said, allowing runoff to infiltrate beneath the asphalt and wash out the
subsurface of the roadway. Crews fix the problem by digging out the casting
and re-sealing it.
So far this season
the Street Department has repaired about a dozen storm drains throughout the
town with another four or five work orders outstanding, Schnadenberg said.
July in Review
In July the
Stormwater Utility ran a deficit of $6, 568 and in the year-to-date is
running a surplus of $14,317.
