As far as matches go, the Chesterton wrestling team did enough to win.

But, 18 points of forfeits made the difference as the Trojans dropped a 39-26 Duneland Athletic Conference decision to No. 5 Crown Point on Wednesday.

“It’s a loss that felt like a little victory,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “We had some great performances from some guys. We won some hard-fought matches and I think we were in better shape than they were. They won three one-point matches or we may win this match.

“We were right there with a team ranked fifth in the State.”

CP started the night with a forfeit win at 220 before Connor Smith tied the team score at 6-6 with a fall victory over Ricky Seifert.

“Connor doesn’t care what weight we put him out,” Joll said. “He just wants to know where he is in the lineup that night and then goes out and does what he’s supposed too.”

Jack Tolin pushed the Trojans into the lead with a 12-2 victory at 106 before a forfeit and three straight close victories put the Bulldogs on top.

“Jack Tolin is good. He finds ways to win,” Joll said. “I want to see what Jack Tolin is like when we shake him up and see what he can do. Right now, he’s just textbook, take you down and ride you.”

The CP victory run went all the way to 160 where Sawyer Hallas ended it with a 3-2 victory over Dax Jones.

“Sawyer had a match where we were in better shape and it was very emotional,” Joll said. “I think we can build off of that and Sawyer can build off of that.”

The Trojans followed that with three straight victories from Alex Katsafaros (170), Jaycee Jensen (182) and Dan Cutter (195).

“Alex, Jaycee and Danny Cutter wrestled like they do in the room,” Joll said. “They were going non-stop and that’s what we ask them to do. It’s nice to see that we’re working on the base of our conditioning and it’s at the point where we can win some tough matches.

“Our older guys are finding ways to win. I was really happy with that.”
