Trojan Gymnasts win Regional title

Everyone believed it was a forgone conclusion Saturday.

But, the top-ranked Chesterton gymnastics performed anyway and left little doubt who the favorite would be next weekend at the IHSAA State Finals in Noblesville.

“It was a stellar day,” Chesterton head coach Dawn Matthys said. “We came in strong, put in the work, made a few lineup changes and everyone performed great.”

The Trojans rolled to the IHSAA Valparaiso Regional title with a 114.45. Lake Central was runner-up (110.875) and Portage (107.55) was third. All three teams advance to State.

“The girls put in a lot of hard work this week in practice and it showed today,” Matthys said.

The Trojans got the hard work out of the way in the first rotation with a 28.425 on Beam. Sophie Hunzelman won the event with a 9.70, while Jordan Bush was third (9.575). Mia Pack rounded out the team score with a 9.15 and Alyssa Donovan posted a 9.0.

“We added Mia on another event (Beam) today,” Matthys said.

It wouldn’t be the only lineup change of the day as the Trojans inserted senior Hailee Ellenwood into the Floor group in the second rotation.

“Hailee was a last-minute sub on the floor, but she’s a senior and she’s been called on to do that for four years,” Matthys said. “She’s a pro. She didn’t even warm-up. She was ready to go and we knew we could count on her.”

Bush won the event with a 9.70 and Hunzelman finished third (9.475. Ellenwood scored a 9.275 and Baylie Lawson posted a 9.20.

Chesterton continued to get stronger as the day went on and tallied a 28.65 team score in the third rotation on the Vault.

Bush led the way with a fourth place finish (9.625) and Pak was sixth (9.55). Lawson tallied a 9.475 and Hunzelman scored 9.0.

“Sophie stepping into all-around is a great thing for us,” Matthys said. “She’s had a few setbacks on vault and today wasn’t her best vaulting day. But, she’s working really hard at it and I’m really proud of her for that.”

The final touches came on the Trojans top event with a 28.925 that included a 1-2-3 Chesterton finish. Pak won with a 9.80, followed by Bush (9.575) and Hunzelman (9.55).

Bush won the All-Around title with a 38.475 to edge Valparaiso’s Whitney McKeon (38.15). Hunzelman was third (37.725).

“Jordan is Jordan. She’s so powerful and strong and just doesn’t get down on herself,” Matthys said. “She doesn’t just cheer for own teammates, she’s cheering for every kid in the gym. She’s just an amazing young lady.”

The Trojans will compete for the final time this season next Saturday when they travel to Noblesville High School for the IHSAA State Finals. The meet begins at 12 p.m. Chesterton time.
