One last regular season run through before the post-season starts and the Chesterton Gymnastics team appears ready.

For the second consecutive meet, the Trojans posted a season-best score and eclipsed 111 points to the tune of a 111.775-95.05 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Lake Central on Monday night.

“The girls are really building confidence and are starting to come together at the right time to make a nice post-season run,” Chesterton coach Kathy Wilburn said. “I expect us to keep peaking throughout the rest of the year.”

The Trojans got a dominant performance from senior Kelley Freeman in her first all-around appearance since a knee injury earlier this season.

“It was such a great night for Kelley,” Wilburn said. “The last couple meets for her have been all about mental preparation. We knew physically she was coming back, but mentally she had to have the courage to get back up there and throw the skills.”

Freeman won three individual events with a 9.60 on vault, a 9.50 on bars and a 9.55 on the floor. She posted a 38.025 score to win the all-around.

“Having Kelley as an anchor gives us a spark,” Wilburn said. “She really struggled to get back to where she is now. When you have someone like that, you don’t have a choice but to draw inspiration from her.

“I was really impressed with her tonight, especially on the vault.”

Teammate Elizabeth Kozak won the beam with a 9.50, while classmate Brianne Hendrix finished second in the all-around with a 36.925.

“I think a big part of (our scores) is getting healthy again,” Wilburn said. “But, we had a lot of kids that really had to step up for us throughout the year. That’s given us a much deeper team and that’s only going to help us going forward.”
